“They asked us to stay at home, but a lot of people have no savings so that was impossible. They asked us to wash our hands, but 1 in 3 poor households has access to running water… Only half of the Peruvian homes have refrigerators, forcing many families to return daily to crowded markets, a major source of contagion”, said Peruvian Hugo Ñopo to The New York Times.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, 20% of Peru’s 33 million population lived below the poverty line, but it is estimated that this crisis will push an additional 8% of the population into extreme poverty. On this and other socio-economic indicators, Covid-19 is likely to wipe out the last decade of progress in Peru.

Help Peru has responded to the Covid-19 emergency by funding relief operations of organizations in:
- Healthcare: providing
protection for healthcare workers & treatment for COVID-19 patients; supplying water filters - Education: producing radio programs to inform about COVID-19 prevention in the Amazon, and audiobooks to be broadcasted on the radio for homeschooling
- Food: providing food baskets for families in Lima and the highlands
